More about sex and chicken

Our chicks are changing daily and are already growing tiny feathers. Amazing!

Nick is now back from pony club camp and has spent half the day in the hen pen playing with his chicks. (I promise you no more silly innuendo hereafter.) We have investigated potential breeds and tried to sex them.

So far, we think we have two possible buff orpingtons and two cream legbars, one of which we are pretty sure is a cockerel. (Apparently, only the males have a white spot on their heads.)

Now the boys are discussing what to do with supernumerary cockadoodlers. Soup or roast was discussed, but noone felt quite comfortable with eating something that has name.

And they all have names now. The little cream puffs are now called Toffee and Fudge (nice gender neutral names, since they can only be sexed when their combs and wattles start growing, so in about 4 - 5 weeks). The potential Legbars are called Brian and Cleopatra. Nick says, Brian (from 'The Life of...') is really dopy, hence the name. Cleo has beautiful markings around her eyes which make her look really exotic.

Brian is the one on the right.
